that Jess felt made changing gauges difficult Jess quickly developed the modern day extractor system quit his day job and started a company called Briley Manufacturing in his garage Today Briley Mfg is a producer of a wide range of shooting products that are sold worldwide and employs more than 70 people Born in 1927 Jess passed in 2017 at the age of 90 He will long be remembered by the shooting industry and shooting community Rick Smith Hill Adams Award Rick Smith has dedicated the last 20 years of his life to youth shooting and training volunteer instructors for DECEMBER 2018 CLAY TARGET NATION 51 youth sporting programs Born and raised in rural South Carolina he joined the Marine Corps and he served for 13 years in the Marine Corps and the U S Army In 1995 he was introduced to sporting clays at a corporate outing and in 1997 he joined the NSCA Within three years he was a master class shooter Rick was certified as a Level I instructor in 2000 and shortly after being certified Level II he was approached by Gary Greenway then the NSCA Chief Instructor to deliver Level I instruction in the Carolinas Since then Rick has earned his Level III certification and taught more than 350 new instructors He has certified many of the youth coaches active in the South Carolina Youth Shooting Foundation Rick regularly donates his time to help train and develop youth instructors and to teach disadvantaged youth who cannot afford lessons Over the span of his career the number of instructors and shooters he has touched numbers in the thousands Rick is an exemplary and inspiring ambassador for the NSCA and over the last 20 years he has been a very visible activist for youth shooting and for our sport 13 years Steve helped four other clubs get their programs started and in 1999 he took his first full time job in sporting clays at Wern Valley Sportsmans Club in Waukesha where he helped build one of the best facilities in the state He was instrumental in developing the Wisconsin Sporting Clays association which was used as a blueprint for many states that were getting their associations started He was named to three All American teams winning six Wisconsin state titles although he is now better known as a target setter He has set targets for seven Nationals four Regionals and countless State and Zone shoots His advice to new shooters Go and shoot And if you dont have more fun than you have ever had shooting anything else I will refund your money To this day no one has asked for a refund Jesse Briley Hal duPont Jr Service Award For many years now Jess Briley has been synonymous with chokes and tube sets It started when Jess picked up a copy of the Houston Post and saw a Winchester White Wing Gun Club advertisement that read New shooters welcome Now he had a dilemma as he did not have q Janet McDougall XXX two nickels to rub together and was unable to even buy a shotgun He quickly built a barrel set made mostly out of water pipe he found at the junk yard He was still dissatisfied with the awkwardness of the barrel sets so he moved on to make his own tube set At that time the only one being produced was made by Claude Perbaugh who produced an extractor system q Andy Duffy and Vicki Ash accepted Milestone awards for having attended all 30 National Sporting Clays Championship events
