NSCA EVENT COVERAGE T here might be no better way to beat the winter Polar Vortex than to go to Florida and shoot in the many fine sporting clays tournaments held there early in the year Among the best in Florida is the Gator Cup The Gator Cup held this year at the Quail Creek Plantation in Okeechobee Florida February 12 17 has shown a steady increase in participants to more than 750 this year Fred Fanizzi general manager of the Quail Creek Plantation attributes this trend to the staff and personnel treating the guests with utmost hospitality from the moment they step onto the facility Fred determined last year that holding the Gator Cup over six days accommodated the large number of shooters participating in the 13 separate events Gebben Miles last years Gator Cup Champion was absent this year He is taking a pause from shooting this year and spending 10 months in Sydney Australia attending the Hillsong College Pastoral Leadership Program Gebben took a break from his studies and posted well wishes on Facebook for a successful weekend to everyone attending the 2019 Gator Cup 50 WWW NSSA NSCA ORG APRIL 2019 Quail Creek Plantation Okeechobee Florida February 12 17 2019 2019 GATOR CUP BY KEN PODRAZA the Blue course Saturday evening found Wendell Cherry leading with a 98 Red course followed closely by Jack Concannon Red course and Anthony Matarese Blue course with 96s After a fog delay of about 30 minutes Sunday morning shooters switched courses and the competition heated up Wendell shot a 91 on the Blue course while Anthony shot a 97 on Red giving Anthony a four target lead to capture HOA 193 with Wendell Cherry runner up 189 A shoot off for the top three Master class positions resulted in Doug Vine M1 Tom Seay M2 and Kevin De Michiel M3 The Ladies competition was even more dramatic MAIN EVENT The two day 200 target main event found 645 shooters experiencing seasonable weather conditions and challenging targets set by Mike Luongo The event consisted of a Red course with typical Florida palmetto scrubs and some pine trees and a Blue course which was more wide open allowing for more complex target presentations at greater distance Shooter David Dalu thought that generally the targets were fast and edgy with a changing target line transitioning at the ideal break point The scores and other shooter comments like monster targets and worldlevel targets told the tale on
