One topic of discussion among the shooters was a new rule change Effective January 1 2021 it moves the sub gauge events into their own exclusive grouping JANUARY 2021 CLAY TARGET NATION 33 sors and I had the chance to shoot their new Elite 28s that use Kents proprietary Diamond Shot that incorporates highantimony lead with a secret coating ensuring excellent downrange patterns One topic of discussion among the shooters was a new rule change Effective January 1 2021 it moves the subgauge events into their own exclusive grouping I too scratched my head about this move that was approved by a vote of 71 percent of the NSCA Directors Comments from shooters ran from It if aint broke dont fix it to It will keep people from punching into Master Class with the small gauges where theres little competition The truth lies somewhere in between For a definitive answer I turned to NSSA NSCA Executive Director Michael Hampton Jr who made a couple of strong points regarding the rule change There is no perfect system emphasized Hampton However we feel that this change will encourage clubs to hold more sub gauge events Most are now 50 bird side events of larger competitions so perhaps we can gain more interest by offering and shooting 100 bird events with these gauges Hampton was quick to debunk the idea that punching up to higher classes is an advantage There is a perception that it is quicker to punch up to Master class through the small gauge guns but theres a downside Hampton said A shooter in a small area or state with fewer competitions can currently punch up to Master using both the 12 and sub gauges However when he goes to one of the big shoots hes buried and doesnt have much fun whereas if he were in a lower class he might win something Lets face it he said Theres about 15 top shots in our game and breaking into that strata requires more than just punches In the end Hampton reassured shooters This doesnt affect the 12 gauge in any way and If after a couple of years it isnt stirring clubs to offer more 100 bird sub gauge events the strongest reason for the change we can always change it HOA Champ Joseph Joe Zeitler from Pennsylvania said after posting his win It made our three hour drive worth it
